Reports surfaced on Fri., Sept. 17, that Lindsay Lohan had failed a random court-mandated drug test. Hours after TMZ leaked the news, the beleaguered actress took to her Twitter account to confirm speculation.
“Regrettably, I did in fact fail my most recent drug test and if I am asked, I am prepared to appear before judge [Elden] Fox next week as a result,” Lohan posted on Friday.
On Mon., Sept. 20, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Fox reportedly issued a bench warrant for Lohan’s arrest and revoked her probation. The actress, 24, has been ordered to appear in court at 8:30 AM PT on Fri., Sept. 24.
Lohan’s famously active Twitter log is now revealing a more remorseful side to the actress, whose battles with addiction have been widely and often tawdrily chronicled in the media.
“Substance abuse is a disease, which unfortunately doesn’t go away over night,” Lohan tweeted. “I am working hard to overcome it and taking positive steps forward every day… [Testing positive] was certainly a setback for me but I am taking responsibility for my actions and I’m prepared to face the consequences.”
While throngs of gossip websites deride the actress for relapsing so close on the heels of a joint jail-and-rehab stint this summer, the soberer tone of her recent statements might be read as an encouraging sign.
“I am a work in progress, just as anyone else,” she wrote. This air of contrition comes in welcome contrast to the actress’ usually irreverent behavior towards authorities; during her probation hearing in July, for example, she scrawled “f*ck u” in near-microscopic print on her fingernail.
Despite a cameo in the recent B-movie action hit Machete, Lohan’s career has been stalled for nearly half a decade now. In recent years, her nightclub escapades and famously embattled relationship with her father, Michael Lohan – himself a recovering addict, have placed her squarely in the “famous for being famous” camp of celebrity. Lest we forget, however (as Lohan protests in the October issue of Vanity Fair), “I don’t care what anyone says. I know that I’m a damn good actress.”
Lohan had recently planned to play pornography legend Linda Lovelace in the biopic Inferno. Depending on Friday’s court decision, production will continue as scheduled. Though it appears that media outlets would be rooting more for her demise than her recovery, Lohan might take solace in the career trajectory of someone like, say, Drew Barrymore. Her decade-long struggle with drug addiction now seems a distant memory for the ever-popular – and sober – 35-year old.
