Drug Rehabilitation Centers
Updated: May 24, 2010
One of the most crucial aspects of a drug rehabilitation center is the group counseling offered to its patients. After detox, one of the ways in which facilities provide support to its clients is to bring them together; people with shared addiction problems to be able to see and learn from each other, and help each other remain clean and sober. This begins in a rehab center where people are in a safe environment, free from the drugs that brought them there, with expert, professional care to help guide the recovery process. For most addicts, a rehabilitation center is a necessary method way to recover.
Across the internet, it’s possible to find websites which recommend the right drug rehabilitation center. Regardless of where a person goes for a recommendation, it’s clear from comments of former addicts on line that drug rehabilitation centers were the basis of their recovery.
A sampling of internet responses show how important this process is to the addicted individual. One client wrote that the residential program was crucial to recovery, allowing her time away from alcohol and drugs. She gained information about her addiction and skills with which to cope with the addiction. The center also introduced her to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, which provided her with people to call once she left rehab. To her, the inpatient program provided her a strong foundation from which to launch her recovery.
Another client of drug rehab centers cites the safe environment offered by such a place, allowing him to be honest, because others who have been in his situation, called him out whenever he wasn’t truthful. Because of this focus on honesty, because there were no distractions from focusing on recovery, he was able to be clean for five years and longer. In another situation, a client learned in long-term rehab how to change his thinking. In the center, he had to control his behavior and get along with people. On the street, he didn’t realize how anti-social he had become, because he was too filled with pain and anger.
While many programs run for thirty days, longer programs are available. In the case of the last person mentioned, he was in an in-patient program for eight months; however, when he left, he had a support system and a sponsor.
The above examples are anecdotal, culled from comments on the internet, but they demonstrate that for many people rehabilitation centers are a necessary part of recovery. Not everyone has the same experience in these facilities, and so facilities need to be chosen carefully, too. Whatever resources you use, it’s important that you investigate and review the drug rehab center at which you intend to begin your recovery.
