Drug Rehab Programs

Updated: May 24, 2010

There are numerous quality drug rehab treatment programs in all states and major cities in the country. They vary according to length of stay, type of drug for which they offer treatment services and comprehension level of treatment and price. These are the main points of distinction among programs and the individual treatment models are generally similar and differ only according to a few structural factors. Some of the programs are intended to serve addiction to a specific drug, such as cocaine or heroin, while others, particularly of the outpatient and group therapy variety are more inclusive in addiction orientation.

Drugs like heroin and cocaine respond different to human biology than say alcohol or marijuana. Cocaine use leaves metabolite residue that settles into the fatty tissue in the body’s systems. It becomes part of the physiology and doesn’t simply flush out of the system as the noticeable effects of use wear off. Treatment of cocaine addiction requires addressing all of the physiological effects and withdrawal process and this creates a long initial recovery period. The most effective treatment programs for this drug are extended residential facilities and the length of stay can be up to two years.

Heroin is another physiologically treacherous withdrawal and it also occurs in stages. The immediate detoxification from heroin is intense and includes many miserable symptoms. This is only the initial step of the recovery and must be followed by intense residential treatment. Heroin is one of the drugs whose treatment frequently included drug replacement therapy. Methadone is the standard replacement drug therapy for heroin treatment. Its effects, when used appropriately in the treatment prescribed manner, are not mind or mood altering or intoxicating and individuals are able to function normally while taking it.

Alcohol is the most dangerous drug to withdrawal from if the addict is at the point of chronic maintenance use. Withdrawal at this point can be fatal if not monitored by a professional detox clinic. However, after this initial phase of withdrawal the recovery process is behavioral and mental health oriented. The alcohol is removed from the system, though individuals are likely to have damaged organs such as the liver in the process of using.

In dealing with treatment for marijuana abuse, there are various theories at work. It was long believed that marijuana was not addictive though people can most definitely become psychologically dependent on it. The treatment models for marijuana abuse are generally based on outpatient therapies. Treatment for marijuana is frequently the product of court order though there are people who self-refer for treatment from this substance.
