Alcohol abuse and addiction is an ongoing problem for people from all demographic backgrounds. Alcohol abuse treatment centers are aware of the fact that there are no economic, racial, religious or cultural predetermining elements that will guarantee protection from or definite issues with this legal, though toxic substance. And while it is true that some studies indicate one glass of red wine and certain other drinks may be beneficial, the fact remains that alcohol is toxic and it is your bodies response to being poisoned that accounts for the physical consequences of abusing this substance. However, there is a difference between social and occasional drinking and problems with and even abuse of and addiction to alcohol. If you or someone you love is concerned you may be an alcoholic, there are various questionnaires that can help you to recognize specific signs of addiction.
Treatment Centers for alcohol abuse and addiction come in three basic varieties, or tiers. One of them is for individuals who have reached the level of physical addiction that requires them to maintain a certain level of alcohol in their system at all times. This is found in those individuals who are known for having “liquid lunches” or “drinking “their meals.” When people become physiologically addicted to alcohol their body is dependent on its constant presence in order to function and survive. This is the most dangerous form of addiction because any untreated cessation of alcohol use will most likely result in the death of the addict. This represents the first type of alcohol treatment facility and this is simply structured for the immediate withdrawal and detoxification process. After the patient survives the first couple of days in a certified withdrawal facility they will be referred to another program.
Extended in-patient treatment centers are the second tier of alcohol abuse treatment facilities and they are generally based on a one month or twenty eight day stay. And while they can sometimes serve other chemical addiction patients, there are common components of the treatment. They frequently include individual and group counseling as well as educational programs and other self expression groups.
The final, and most popular aspect of alcohol abuse treatment is with the outpatient group or individual therapies that are available. In addition, twelve step group meetings such as alcoholics anonymous are incredibly popular and meetings occur everyday and at multiple times and locations throughout the day in most cities. AA is also the most successful of the twelve step or outpatient group programs and its built in support system helps many addicts remain sober for the rest of their lives.
