I’ve never considered myself an alcoholic but I did love drinking, and lots of drinking led to me taking drugs so the way I see it, they’re related.

I went from having about 50 beers a week to having about 5 beers a fortnight and it wasn’t some big decision, I just started filling my life with worthwhile goals and fun hobbies. I was playing sport and I didn’t want to go on the field drunk so I wouldn’t drink, I was going to an acting class and I didn’t want to forget my lines, so I didn’t drink. You see what I’m getting at here, what do you guys think?

I am not sure the drinking and drugs are directly related exactly, I think its more about the people themselves. Someone who has an addictive personality (which I most certainly do), is prone to overdo anything. Alcohol, Drugs, video games, doesn’t matter the medium, the overdoing is the same.

It can be easier than others for some. Some people suddenly stop drinking while others simply cut down on it gradually, which is without a doubt probably the most best, safest and easiest way of giving it up.

Didn’t work for me bro.. I tried everything to cut down, the only thing that worked was going sober because otherwise one beer would turn into ten beers, it wouldn’t take much at all for me to lose my self-control.

I have a few hobbies that I can occupy myself with that stops me drinking too much. I wouldn’t say I drink too much however, but when I do, I usually just resort to one of my hobbies such as painting.

Like Bob said, painting is one of my hobbies to. I don’t drink much anyway, but it does keep me away from it sometimes if I feel like one. A hobby like tennis or football is ideal for distracting your drink temptations.

I tried the “keeping yourself busy” route, but it really work for me. What I found very helpful is, when I really started wanting a drink, I would call up a particular friend who would talk me off the ledge. This guy was great. Sometimes he would hear in my voice I was still going to drink and without me asking, he would come over and hang out with me.

I know I was lucky having someone like that to lean on. Not sure I could have made it without him.
