David Cassidy on his third DUI

David Cassidy Heart Throb

The former Partridge Family star David Cassidy has been arrested for the third time on DUI charges. His car was stopped by police after he made and illegal right hand turn in Los Angeles on Friday the 10th of January. Upon approaching the car the arresting officer said he noticed “… the odor of an alcoholic beverage was emitting from the vehicle”. The former teen heart throb, now aged 63, blew 19% which is twice the legal limit. He was booked in a Los Angeles jail but released later on bond.  Cassidy was arrested on two previous occasions. He was detained on a drunken driving charge in Schodack, New York, last August after he failed to dim his car’s headlights at a police checkpoint. Cassidy also entered a no contest plea as a first-time offender in February 2011 to a drunken driving charge that followed a November 2010 arrest in Florida (where he now resides). He was sentenced to a year’s probation and had his driver’s license was suspended for six months. He also attended a DUI school, paid a $500 fine and served 50 hours of community service. Cassidy played the eldest of the Partridge family children alongside his real life step mother Shirley Jones. The show was a very successful and when production ended he continued on with a solo music career, playing sell out shows.

Cassidy like many other Hollywood stars is racking up a list of alcohol related arrests. He joins a long list of actors such as, Mischa Barton, Lindsay Lohan, Khloe Kardashian, Haley Joel Osment and Amanda Bynes, to name but a few. All of the above have been (including Cassidy) have been in the spotlight from a young age. Combinations of many things common to child stardom tend to lead to drug and alcohol abuse. Drug and alcohol abuse is usually something associated with people in lower socio-economic sectors but it seems the pressures of Hollywood stardom and the upkeep of successful careers can lead to substance dependency. The link between child stars and substance abuse can be attributed to a variety of factors such as, easy access to drugs and alcohol, parental and managerial acceptance of abuse to keep their “young star” happy, and the stress, depression and emptiness that is typical of children that feel abandoned, used and unloved by their parents and the very people who are supposed to be there to protect and guide them in such a high profile and public life. Sadly for some the pressures of life in the limelight and the subsequent substance abuse can lead to young talented lives being lost way before their time. Celebrities such as Corey Haim, River Phoenix, Heath Ledger, Brittany Murphy, Judy Garland and Dana Plato, again to name just a few, have all been lost to addiction.

We hope that David finds the help he needs and moves on to recovery.
